What Kinds of Students Get Good Grades?
These are characteristics that make "good" students. If you struggle with math - make sure you are doing all these things to ensure you get a C or better in my class.
Good Students...
1. Ask for help - They ask friends, classmates, relatives, even other math teachers, whenever they have the chance. They are not shy to ask someone during lunch, after school, or during class time - when it is appropriate to do so.
2. Make sacrifices - To ensure they learn as much as possible, good students sometimes skip hanging out with friends, football practice, Facebooking, gaming or watching TV to make sure they get the help they need.
3. Prevent bad grades - Good students know when they are struggling to understand a topic and seek out help IMMEDIATELY. Good students know when they need to get help to prevent bad test grades.
4. Take good notes - Students who keep their notes organized and use them refer back to topics we have covered do very well in our class. Notes are also excellent resources for making "Study Guides" for a test.
5. Have excellent attendance - They only miss school when they are really, really sick, and they never ditch class.
6. Help others & get help from others - As the saying goes, "Two heads are better than one." Students who help one another learn from each others mistakes, challenge each other to explain their thinking, and help each other reach their full potential. Groups that work well together ALWAYS get good grades on Group Tests.
7. Come for tutoring regularly if they need it - Good students are good students because they try hard, and do anything necessary to get the grades they want. If a student struggles with math, they make a point to come to tutoring regularly.
8. Have a study buddy (or team) - Good students do homework in groups and help each other to finish assignments.
9. Learn the Language of Math - Students who learn math vocabulary are better able to describe differences between different types of problems, and understand the relationships between different numbers/quantities. For example, if I know the words "simile" and "metaphor" in English class, I am able to accurately describe the kind of sentence a writer has constructed. Words help us compare and contrast different things, and gain deeper understandings of a topic. This is a very important skill in math class as well.
10. Are driven to do their best - And will do anything and everything they can to achieve their dreams. They don't let anything get in their way of learning how math works!
11. Stay organized - They put things where they go, so they can always find it when they need it.
